View Weather Map Symbols Wind Direction PNG. Wind barbs are symbols on the map that show wind direction and speed at some specified location. The flagpole or directional vector of a wind barb shows you which way the wind is blowing.
A weather symbol is plotted if at the time of observation, there is either precipitation occurring or a condition causing reduced visibility. Blue cold front lines bring rain and wind in the direction the triangular marks point. A trough is not a boundary but an elongated area of lower air pressure.
The weather map below illustrates high and low pressure systems as well as frontal boundaries.
Wind barbs point in the direction from which the wind is blowing. For example, an arrow pointing upwards indicates a wind blowing from the south to the north, along with the letter s to indicate that it is a southerly wind. The weather map below illustrates high and low pressure systems as well as frontal boundaries. It is a familiar format for displaying the wind to all meteorogists, yachtmen and others.
